10 kg of NOx is roughly equivalent to the total annual emissions of one average passenger cars. In the environment, this amount triggers the formation of ground-level ozone and smog that damage both human lungs and agricultural crops. It also causes eutrophication in water bodies, leading to toxic algal blooms and oxygen depletion. With N₂O, the climate impact is significant as it is roughly 300 times more potent at trapping atmospheric heat than CO₂.

Uncombusted hydrocarbons from conventional two-stroke outboards create a persistent and acutely toxic aquatic environment, primarily by discharging 20–30% of their fuel and fuel oil directly into the water. A spill of 100 liters of uncombusted hydrocarbons—roughly the volume of two large trash cans—is considered a small-scale incident. Despite its size, it can contaminate up to 100 million liters of water and trigger a series of immediate physical and biological changes.
